Most trade businesses don't lose local search rankings because a competitor is doing something clever. They lose them because their own site is quietly working against them — and nobody's ever pointed it out. These are the five issues we find most often when we audit a tradie's website.
1. No dedicated page per suburb or service
A single "Services" page trying to cover ten suburbs and five trades can't compete with a competitor who has a specific page for "emergency plumber Reservoir" or "hot water system Essendon". Google needs a clear, relevant page to show for a specific search — not a general one it has to guess about.
2. Google Business Profile isn't linked properly (or claimed at all)
For local trades, your Google Business Profile often drives more enquiries than the website itself. If it's unclaimed, has an inconsistent business name/address/phone number, or isn't linked to your site, you're leaving the single highest-converting piece of local SEO unused.
Your business name, address and phone number should be written identically everywhere — your website, Google Business Profile, and any directory listing. Inconsistency quietly erodes trust with Google's local algorithm.
3. Slow load times on mobile
Most "find a plumber near me" searches happen on a phone, often mid-emergency. A homepage weighed down by an unoptimised 4K video or huge image files can take five or more seconds to load on mobile — long enough that the visitor has already called someone else before your page finishes rendering.
4. No reviews, or reviews that never get a reply
Review count and recency are a ranking factor, not just a trust signal. A profile with three reviews from 2023 tells Google (and customers) the business isn't active. Replying to every review — good or bad — also matters more than most trades realise.

Schema markup is the structured data that tells Google exactly what your business is, what suburbs you serve, and what services you offer — without it, Google has to guess. Sites without it are less likely to show rich results (star ratings, FAQs, business info) in search, which usually means a lower click-through rate even at the same ranking position.
The fix, in short
- Build a page per core service + suburb combination that actually matters to your business
- Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile, matched exactly to your site
- Compress images and cut unnecessary video weight on the homepage
- Ask every happy customer for a review, and reply to the ones you get
- Add LocalBusiness and Service schema markup sitewide
None of this is a quick trick — it's groundwork. But it's groundwork that compounds: once it's in place, it keeps working for you long after the invoice is paid.
